Today was the start of many things. It's an introduction weekend which the university and the International Office have come up with; to introduce the newbies to the block. It was based off the old Mensa at Wilhemsplatz (or Willy). Stepping into the little "foyer", I was presented with a badge that had my name on it, a folder with some bits of paper and I was off to make new friends. :)
The day started off with a walk around a few places. The first being Universitätsbund Göttingen, which is a nice old building located opposite the International Office. It's where PhD students come to party. And I hear they have some kind of a jail in there somewhere. Next was through some streets, looking at old Goettingen architectures made from wood with carvings aplenty. Then to the gänseliesel and the old town hall.
Because I'm in a group of students who belong to the Nordcampus. We took a bus up that way. It would have otherwise taken an hour to walk. There, we walked around, visiting a few faculties. Visited the Nordmensa too. Kinda sad but was okay. Small. We actually waited in line from the bottom of the stairs (ground floor) and made our way up to the first floor where the food and canteen is. And this will be my mensa for the many days ahead when the classes begin.
It was all nice. My group was a mix of nationalities: Hungarians, Israelite, Indonesian, Taiwanese, American, Russian, Burmese, Peruvian, Tunisian and Malaysian (that being myself). I believe I was the only odd one though as I couldn't speak German. Initially I did get some translations but yeah, you kinda have to figure most of it out really. Oh did I mention we walked through parts of the klinkum? Met some professors, looked at some machines and computers, and walked a bit more.
After all that, we went back to where we started, the base of operations, the old mensa at Willy. Had some cakes, made more conversations, had some coffee too and finished off the day with a game of "Speed Dating".
